You Don’t Owe the World the Old You

“You’ve changed.”

Ever hear those words from someone? There was a time when I might have heard those words as criticism. As though changing meant I had somehow wandered too far from who I was supposed to be.

But these days I ask: What if that is exactly what growth is supposed to look like?

Sometimes growth looks like becoming unrecognizable to those around us—not because we’ve lost ourselves, but because we’ve slowly let go of all the things we once thought we had to be.

The roles.
The expectations.
The need to be understood.
The need to keep showing up as the version of ourselves that made sense to everyone else.

There comes a point on this journey where even we may not completely recognize ourselves.

And maybe that’s okay.

Maybe we were never meant to arrive at one fixed version of ourselves and stay there forever.

Maybe part of awakening is having the courage to keep unlearning, questioning, shedding, and becoming.

So grow-

Even if people don’t understand us anymore.

Even if the old labels no longer fit.

Even if we’re still discovering who we are without them.

We don’t owe the world consistency with a version of ourselves we’ve already outgrown.

Maybe we can give ourselves—and each other—the freedom to keep becoming.

To change our minds.
To question what we once believed.
To laugh differently, live differently, love differently.
To outgrow identities that once felt permanent.
To simply stay curious about who we are becoming.
